Weekending 13/8/2007

Great fishingSorry if we are a bit late, late in Sunday and tired so here we go, mixed week and a few good fish, the weather has still been a problem Monday Dave Mellor and party bit slow few hounds and skate but no giants, Tuesday good anglers different place, due to smaller tides went east deep water but still could have been quicker, with the small tides ect tried a mark that I used to fish regularly but like so many now fished out with so many boats and parties now equipped to go to some of the marks I've had to myself over the years pressure tells.  I tried another mark nearby 53ft deep wreck.no bass but interestingly lots of small cod to about 1.5lbs, we did manage one of about 4lbs but interesting.  These inshore wrecks are full of smaller codling.most of the bigger cod tend to favour the deeper water wrecks this wreck was called the Kankee and was sunk by a sea plane in 1918.  As we had cod ect it pointed to clear water so thursday we dived it.

It was well broken up and littered with discarded/lost lobster pots few lobsters there and few cod on it.  But as it was force 5/6 easterly it was as you can imagine quite rough and it took its toll on a couple of the gang, I moved to another wreck that I always favour for a pretty dive and it was amazing I have fished this wreck for over 20 years and regularly had good bass but once again it has suffered the consequence of being over fished and another site that I have considered spoilt by the ever increasing visitors.  The bass were there in numbers and size and the viz was at least 5 meters I could have touched the bass, also there were a few cod, odd pout, lobsters and crabs and again lots of discarded pots but the bass numbers prompted interest?  Saturday decided to try west we had plenty of crab and conditions looked good so we tried the maplins Regular party from Norfolk / Suffolk area.

We had a few hounds and things looked good,we decided to try the gullies and moved right in to 7ft of water, Not loads of fish but quality and great to see them tail walk and jump which one did, weed wasn't a problem and we did lose a bloody good fish under the boat. When you are talking 20lb + fish which many of these are you are into serious fishing and often as was the case this day you lose and can only imagine how big it was.  Biggest fish that day boated was 14lbs to Andrew Cooper.Sunday the party decided they wanted to have a go a my little bass wreck,Knowing what I'd seen diving and attraction this mark had for everything that seems to float now we left early. No it never happened We had two bass one keeper,we also had about 40 codling a couple of hounds, skate and mackerel but the bass weren't there. In all honesty the bigger fish were right inside the wreck and how you get at them who knows, I could have quite easily with a spear gun.  Like I said in years gone past I have like so many other marks had them to myself but alass not now.with this day and age people clock your marks and popularity kills them!!!!!!!!!!

It says something when you have to leave an hour earlier to get a parking space on a wreck that you've had to yourself for 20+ years.  We lost a lot of tackle but gave it our best shot only good thing is I can get some of our tackle back but the visitors cant and it is snaggy. We eventually gave up and tried a few more local wrecks one keeper codling, horse mackerel but no bass, that is till we hit the river.

The birds were working so we tried,we got as many as you want but no size. All the boats struggled Sunday evidently the tides were 1.5 meter below predictions this could this have affected the fish who knows but catches were down by all, you could tell that by the boats moving about.  Anyway quite week this week weather looks crap for the first three days anyway so will see, don't forget next years dates now taking bookings and couple of weekends available now this year due to parties not filling the boat cheers Dave Weaving
