week ending 1st May 2006 |
wwwwwwsswmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Well sorry if we are a bit late, bit like the fish.Been out four days this week and yes been a struggle The big spring tides have meant we pushed them both ways every day. We found a few fish but with strong North Easterlies every day it hasn't been comfortable. For the novice we can say yes lots of dog fish but that's not what we want to boast about .There were a few bass showing on the Gunfleet sands Thursday and Friday on both worm and squid but by Saturday they had all but disappeared ,We managed to find a few skate but all of the boats struggled. Saturday we pushed the tide all the way to Burrow 2 . There were a few fish there but strong Easterlies made it quite uncomfortable .The bonus this week was a couple of hounds approaching the 5lbs mark and a lot of smaller hounds. Also putting in an appearance were a few Spur dog which tended to succumbed to mackerel baits ,We don't get to many of these ,they tend to cross the mouth of the Thames estuary and some venture West ,nice to see them all species are welcome. From Thursday it seemed down hill. With the easterlies boats fishing inshore struggled the skate are quite easily turned off by any sudden changes and that certainly was the case this week. With tides dropping this week and hopefully the wind moving to the South West we should see a bit more excitement .Best baits for the coming week will be squid and herring. and hopefully the water should start clearing. With the first showing of hounds it wont be long before we start searching for hermits.Ken Collins from the Uk shark program has forwarded me another implement for tagging the hounds and tope. As far as I know out of the 150 I tagged last year only one has been caught. As soon as we start in earnest I will ask for the records so as to keep you all updated .We managed to tag quite a few last year and quite a few tope, this does benefit us all one way or the other If any one is interested from private or charter boats in assisting with tagging please contact me and I will forward you with the information required.Ken Collins who is running the program from Southampton University was understandably a bit disappointed with the effort put in by some would be enthusiasts last year. This program is sponsored in part by the world wild life program and all tags /records ect are quite expensive. It does benefit us both in Knowledge and interest and could if needed be an asset if the tope and hounds were in the absense of commercially viable fish suddenly found to be a target. So only serious/taggers please cheers Dave . .nO PICS WWWWWW
