Did You fish this week?was it from the right port /boat/venue?We only had three trips this week Monday and the weekend, these were both different and productive .Monday five regulars from Cambridge area Dave Mellor. We Started to go off but the forecast was very suspect,On the way out I saw a few birds dotted about ,I got two of the anglers to try feathers and straight away small bass,we drifted further and picked up a few herring,by the next drift we spotted more birds to the west ,Bingo we were into some larger herring and bass The gulls were taking full size herring off the surface and were struggling to take off. The bass were forcing them to the surface. We kept nine bass to 18inches and there were some very good ones there and lots returned ,come 12pm the tide had started to run the wind freshened so we were glad of staying local.Took about 2 hrs for our next fish but we stayed out a bit later to make the most of the wait .We had several codling and whiting ,the biggest codling size wise should have tipped the scales at about 7lbs but could only manage about 4lbs.Saturday was flat calm all the other boats cleared off?Five good anglers on board and one who hadn't fished for ten years .I bucked the trend and stayed local.27 CODLING LARGEST 6LBS AND 4LBS one skate of 6lbs and loads of whiting, not bad for a river trip.To all those parties that say we don't want to fish the river ?think again there are times and that is the benefit of fishing from our port.We can still get out often and catch fish when other ports have to cancel .Sunday we had the Colchester Sea anglers aboard. We fished the same mark but it was quite a bit slower we still had a dozen codling with one angler having 3 to 4lbs,the whiting were not so many and we suffered with the weed a bit but listening to the other boats that ventured to Clacton I think we got it right. We didn't win but came second, lost by 2lbs which could have been one fish but all twenty contestants weighed in top weight 12lbs ,top weight on our boat 10lbs.THE NFSA had a contest at East bourne The main catch was dog fish ,pouting and Whiting and was won with a hound of 5lbs.I think when you look at weather conditions ,traveling, cancellations ect that puts all our boats in a good position ?cheers Dave Weaving.
